Rogers has just price dropped the LG Optimus Pad. This LG tablet is now free with a 2- or 3-year contract, while no-term is still $549.99. The Honeycomb tablet first made available on Rogers in May of last year. The reason behind the recent price drop comes as a mystery, however some speculation suggests that Rogers is simply making way for another LG branded tablet, the LG Optimus Pad with LTE connectivity and an 8.9 inch display. The LG Optimus Pad is in a class of its own in the Android tablet space with an 8.9 inch (1280 x 768) capacitive touchscreen display, 2 megapixel front facing camera and two 5 megapixel rear facing cameras on the back. The tablet sports the ability to capture 3D video. Moreover, it has dual-core 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, a 32GB of internal storage, aGPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a 3.5mm headphone jack, HDMI output, and runs Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

HTC has confirmed that it will be slashing its smartphone portfolio for 2012. HTC has learned quantity over quality is not the best strategy. In an interview with Mobile magazine, Phil Roberson, executive director of HTC U.K. and Ireland, said that HTC’s 2012 will look a bit different from its 2011.

“We have to get back to focusing on what made us great – amazing hardware and a great customer experience,” he said. “We ended 2011 with far more products than we started out with. We tried to do too much.”

In addition to focusing on fewer smartphone models, Roberson said that HTC will not spend as much resources on tablets, instead training its eye on capturing back lost smartphone market share
